Goodwood Festival Of Speed From A Novice.
Goodwood Festival of Speed From A Novice.
My attraction to cars has always been there, yet as with many things, time has restricted me from having much knowledge of them, let alone photographing them. However, from a basic perspective, I receive pleasure from the detail and character that cars possess, whether it’s the choice of fabric interiors that complement the car’s finish and colour, or each car's unique sound.
I attended Goodwood’s Festival Of Speed on the Thursday with my father and I did not know quite what to expect as a first-time attendee, but one thing was for sure, my interest in cars was one of thousands. Dodging through the crowds of petrolheads my father and I found a place to settle to analyse how we would go about our day. After finding a free bench to perch on I heard this roar, the Red Arrows, diving and looping painting the sky with red, white and blue clouds, classically British.
Meandering around we came across Porche’s set up which displayed hundreds of their most infamous designs. Lined up at the front of the Porche field was their range of classic 911 cars, dating from the 1970s to the late ‘80s. Their charming characteristics, such as their oval headlights allowed them to stand out in the sea of Porche’s in modernised designs today. Even with my limited knowledge, I have always appreciated and been drawn to their timeless look (but who isn’t?).
After exploring what Porche had to offer, my father and I climbed to the top of the hill to view the different classes of cars at the motor circuit finishing point. You could hear the rumble of the engines before you saw the cars sweep around the corner, quickly flashing by and soon disappearing again, creating an adrenaline rush.
In contrast to the sleek sports cars on the motor circuit, off-road cars had their showcase at the top of this hill where their clunky yet charming shells carted around the South Down mounds.
After seeing more of the classes from the grandstands, we walked back to the car park, passing by the supercar showcase. The intricate designs caught your eye at every angle, due to the car's finish and carefully chosen wheel colour to compliment it, or the wings doors. Perhaps apparent, but a factor which stood out to me, was the level of respect all attendees had towards these priceless cars as they carefully observed, questioned, or photographed the cars.
I relived Thursday’s thrill as my father's friend offered his Friday spot, so I took a friend of mine who is fond of Formula 1. We began the day by visiting the supercar showcase, where I was able to see more of the cars that had been out on the tracks the day before up close. We spent the rest of the afternoon perched on a bench, watching the various classes of cars glide by.
On reflection, my first experience of the Festival of Speed gave me a mix of on-edge unexpected emotions and left me with an appreciation for the vast world of cars and the enthusiasts who know it so well. I now must give credit to those who are professional car photographers. It challenged my composition skills, due to the level of detail within the manufacturing of these cars. And notably their rapid pace, which with ever-changing light tested me as I often only had a second to prepare before they appeared around the corner on the motor circuit. Most importantly, I gained a newfound respect for the organisers of the event and drivers who provided attendees with an unforgettable show.
