Cheddar Gorge

The Story

Strong coffee is what our morning started with. But not at home, in the car on the way as Jared insisted. Only running 10 minutes behind schedule Bob Dylan was soon playing in the car and we were off to Cheddar Gorge. Some may hope for a winter’s sun on a hike (not that I have much expertise) but for me, the mist set the perfect autumnal theme for the day, and my camera.

Once arriving at the quaint village we began by climbing through its narrow alleys which soon turned to grass, leading us to a tower. The view included; the beginning of the gorge, the reservoir and the landscape in the distance pointing out of the mist. Not sure what I was in for but consumed by my surroundings, I was grateful for the excuse of my camera and to “take in the view.” Although, having said this every bend had me urging to take a photograph. Jared with much patience (and more expertise than I have) guided me along the top.

Meandering along the crest included spotting several mountain goats being herded far in the distance, which wouldn’t be the first we would see. Clambering on a little further, a perfectly positioned goat (occasionally glancing over to me) was admiring its landscape. By climbing down a little, with my very much protected Canon-f1 being passed between us, I managed to get a little closer and it was seemingly used to outsiders. We moved onwards and upwards, then downwards and upwards once again.

Steering slightly off the main path we found a spot to stop and have our marmite and cheese sandwiches, and to my horror, Jared's first time having it with cheese. Feeling swallowed by the vast size of the gorge, this view gave us the opportunity to see the stretch of the sculpted road dividing us from the side that we began on.

Wondering down the not-so-obvious path with a little uncertainty (from my side) we searched for a way down. However, our untraditional route caused an occasional “ouch” from a bramble being caught in our trousers or pull as they had looped into our knit jumpers. Grateful for finding a path again, perhaps a little too hasty thinking from me, a non-purposeful knee slide slip seemed to wrap up the walk. Thankful once again to my much more experienced guide, the camera was safe.
